Qimuk Music was founded by singer/songwriter William Tagoona in the 1980's to promote Inuktitut Music in Canada. During this era music produced by Canadian Inuit was spreading across the country. Broadcast recordings were being pressed but not available to the consumer. William wanted to change that and got the rights from Inuit singers to sells their music in northern stores across the Arctic and Greenland.
William was convinced promoting Inuktitut would accomplish two things. First it would promote pride in the youth in their heritage. Secondly it would not only enhance the presence of the Inuktitut language as a working language, but music would help secure the survival of Inuktitut.
